A protection budget includes regular premiums and costs you may pay when using coverage.
Use actual documents
Record each premium and renewal date. Divide a six-month charge across those months to plan ahead. A generic online price is not your household’s actual expense.

Look beyond the premium
Identify deductibles, copayments, limits, and exclusions. Terms differ by product. A lower premium may mean more out-of-pocket exposure, so compare the whole arrangement.
Give savings a role
An accessible cash reserve can help with a deductible or unexpected expense. Set a target suited to your situation and build gradually. Do not assume savings replace coverage for every large loss.
Review when circumstances change
Compare revised terms at renewal. Ask about household, property, work, or income changes. Keep needed existing coverage in force until a replacement is confirmed, and record when new payments begin.
