A mortgage is one part of a family coverage estimate. Decide how housing would fit the surviving household budget before choosing a benefit amount.
Identify the obligation
Write down the loan balance, payment, remaining term, and co-borrowers. Include taxes, maintenance, and utilities. Paying off a mortgage would not eliminate those other expenses.

Compare two household plans
One hypothetical plan uses part of a benefit to repay the mortgage. Another keeps the loan and reserves funds for payments while preserving cash for childcare and living costs. Compare both against continuing income and available savings.
Distinguish products
Mortgage insurance that protects a lender differs from life coverage that pays named beneficiaries. Mortgage-protection products may have their own beneficiary arrangements or declining benefits. Read who receives the payment and what event triggers it.
Count the mortgage once
If you include a full payoff, avoid also counting years of the same mortgage payments without adjusting the living-expense estimate. Review coverage duration and affordability, and keep existing coverage until any replacement has actually taken effect.
