A life policy’s beneficiary designation should reflect the people or arrangements you intend to support. A short review can prevent confusion.
Start with the insurer’s record
Check the current designation directly with the insurer. A note at home does not necessarily change it. Confirm names and contact information and ask how to update details securely.

Include the backup plan
A contingent beneficiary can matter if the primary beneficiary cannot receive the benefit. Ask how multiple beneficiaries and percentage allocations are recorded. Make the intended shares clear.
Handle special situations carefully
Minor children, trusts, blended families, and dependents receiving needs-based benefits may require planning beyond entering a name. Get qualified advice about the arrangement and applicable rules rather than relying on a generic template.
Review after changes
Marriage, divorce, a birth, a death, or changed caregiving responsibilities are reasons to revisit the record. Keep confirmation of accepted changes with the policy and tell a trusted person where those documents are.
