The tax treatment of a life benefit depends on the payment and arrangement. A broad tax-free claim does not answer every situation.

Separate the benefit from interest

Proceeds paid because of the insured person’s death are generally excluded from federal gross income. Interest on those proceeds can be taxable. Ask the insurer to identify payment components.

Check the arrangement

Ownership transfers, some policy arrangements, and estate considerations raise additional questions. State rules may also matter. Usual income-tax treatment does not resolve every estate issue.

Keep records

Save policy information, claim correspondence, payment breakdowns, and tax forms. Each beneficiary should retain records relevant to their own share.

Ask before choosing

Installments can involve interest and different timing from a lump sum. Discuss options with a qualified tax professional using actual documents before making large commitments.
