Understanding your Medicare options

Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers hospital and medical services but has significant gaps. Most people need additional coverage to protect against large out-of-pocket costs:

  • Medicare Advantage (Part C): Replaces Original Medicare with an all-in-one plan from a private insurer. Often includes drug coverage, dental, vision, and hearing. Lower out-of-pocket costs but restricted networks.
  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap): Works alongside Original Medicare to fill coverage gaps — deductibles, copays, coinsurance. Higher premiums but maximum flexibility to see any Medicare-accepting provider in the country.
  • Part D Drug Plans: Adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare. Dozens of plans available — the right one depends on the specific drugs you take.

When to enroll

Your Initial Enrollment Period starts 3 months before you turn 65 and ends 3 months after. Missing this window without qualifying coverage can result in permanent late-enrollment penalties. Annual Open Enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7) lets you switch plans each year.
